Behind the Scenes at CUQ Talks: “Business off the Pitch” ⚽✨

Some experiences go beyond the classroom — they open your eyes to new perspectives, connect you with inspiring people, and remind you why learning never really stops. Volunteering at CUQ Talks: “Business off the Pitch”, hosted by CUQ Ulster University, was exactly that kind of experience for me.

The event featured none other than Fabrizio Romano, one of the most influential and respected sports journalists in the world. Hearing him speak in person was surreal — his energy, humility, and passion for storytelling captivated the entire audience. He shared how his journey began, the challenges of breaking into sports journalism, and how credibility and consistency have helped him build trust with millions of followers across the globe.

What made his talk so fascinating was the way he connected sports, media, and business — revealing how deals, negotiations, and branding shape the modern sports industry behind the scenes. It was a reminder that what we see on the pitch is only half the story; the real business happens off it.

As a volunteer, I had the opportunity to be part of the team that made this event possible. From setting up the venue and coordinating logistics to welcoming guests and supporting event operations, every task played a role in creating a smooth and memorable experience for attendees. Through it all, I got to develop valuable event management, teamwork, and communication skills, while seeing firsthand how much planning and collaboration go into hosting a professional event.

Beyond the work, what I appreciated most was the sense of community—students, staff, and guests coming together to share knowledge, ask questions, and celebrate learning beyond textbooks. Watching the audience engage with Fabrizio and hearing their thoughtful questions showed just how impactful events like CUQ Talks can be in sparking curiosity and ambition.

This experience taught me that volunteering isn’t just about helping out—it’s about being part of something bigger. It’s about contributing to moments that inspire others, while also discovering your own potential in the process.

I’m genuinely grateful to CUQ Ulster University for giving me the chance to be involved in this event and to be part of a community that values growth, connection, and real-world learning. Here’s to more opportunities to learn, lead, and make a difference — both on and off the pitch. ⚽
